  • 16 tablespoons unsalted butter (room temperature, cut into 8 pieces)
  • 1/4 cup fresh squeezed lemon juice
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar (for glaze)
  • 3 tablespoons fresh-squeezed lemon juice (for glaze)
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter (for glaze)
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar (for glaze)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh-squeezed lemon juice (for glaze)
  • 1 tablespoon heavy cream or whole milk (for glaze)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9-inch round cake pan, lining the bottom with parchment paper.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together the sifted cake flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and poppy seeds.
  3. In another bowl, cream the room-temperature butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in sour cream along with lemon zest and juice.
  5. Gradually fold in the dry ingredients until just combined.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for about 65 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  7. While cooling on a wire rack, prepare the glaze by melting butter and mixing it with sugar and lemon juice until smooth.
